If you’ve ever been in a car accident, you know how unsettling it can be. You don’t have much time to think, and everything happens so quickly. That’s why at Ormsby Motors, we want to make sure you are prepared and know exactly what to do if you are ever in an accident.
Stop
The first thing you should do when you’ve been in a car accident is stop. You never want to drive away from the scene of an accident.
Protect the Scene
Prevent more cars from being involved in the accident by letting them know that there was an accident there. Turn your hazard lights on, or set up road flares if you have some. If it’s dark out and your lights don’t work, turn your flashlight on while you wait. Next, make sure you and everyone else involved in the accident is alright.
Call the Police
It’s always a good idea to call the police, even if there weren’t any serious injuries. Sometimes your insurance company might ask for a police file report, even if it is just to make a claim for the damage to your vehicle.
Tell the Truth
When the police come, make sure you tell them everything that happened detail for detail. If you are unsure of what happened, make sure you tell the police that. Never speculate or assume what happened. If you are asked if you’re injured and you’re not sure, make sure you say that. A lot of times injuries and pain from accidents will become apparent hours after the incident. You’ll also want to make sure that the other people involved in the accident are telling the truth.
Exchange Information
If the police do not come to the scene of the accident make sure you get the name, address, and phone number of the other people involved in the accident. This includes any passengers that the other car may have had. You’ll also want to exchange insurance information.
Take Pictures
If there is visible damage to your car or the other person’s car you should take pictures of it. If there are injuries you should also take pictures of them if you are able. However, if there is a police investigation going on, never interfere with it.
Keep a File
After your accident, you’ll want to create a file for all your accident-related documents. This should include a claim’s number, claims adjuster, names and numbers of contacts, and any expenses that you have related to the accident.
Protect Your Rights
One thing that you should do after an accident is contacting your attorney. Your attorney can protect your rights and make sure that valuable evidence is not destroyed. Your attorney will also be able to advise you on what to say to the insurance company to make sure that you are being fully compensated for your vehicle and that you are getting the best medical treatment available.
